Mary Powell
Mary Powell has been coaching for BoldRunning for the past three years. She has also started coaching track at the middle school level. Her coaching philosophy is based on establishing running as a lifestyle, learning to try different types of workouts, and staying healthy. She likes to keep running simple and fun and believes that running with others is an important part of being a long distance runner.
She was born in Oklahoma and played soccer for 12 years as well as many other sports. She started distance running at Lawrence High School in Kansas where she was undefeated in cross country and placed 10th at the high school cross country nationals in 1988. She then went to Wake Forest University and competed in college where she won the 5000 and 10,000 meters at the 1993 ACC Championships as well as completed a liberal arts degree in fine arts. She has competed occasionally in distances up to the marathon since graduating from college but has had several breaks from running when she took time to own a chocolate/ pastry company as well as go to graduate school. She has recently started a new career as an art teacher in Boulder and discovered kayaking and jazz piano.
